Aquesta ponència se centra en la faceta ecologista d’Oriol de Bolòs i Capdevila, i destaca la seva influència pionera en el conservacionisme a Catalunya, especialment a la Garrotxa. S’estructura en tres llegats: la formulació del seu ideari conservacionista des dels anys 70, el seu ferm posicionament científic en la defensa del patrimoni natural amenaçat (com en el cas de la Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa), i la seva contribució a la protecció legal d’aquest patrimoni mitjançant instruments concrets (catàlegs de protecció, creació del jardí botànic d’Olot, normes de protecció de l’Alta Garrotxa). Bolòs, malgrat la seva discreció, va utilitzar el seu prestigi acadèmic per impulsar la salvaguarda del medi ambient i va mostrar un compromís exemplar, cosa que va inspirar una nova generació de naturalistes i conservacionistes.; [EN] This presentation focuses on the ecological side of Oriol de Bolòs i Capdevila, and highlights his pioneering influence on conservationism in Catalonia, especially in La Garrotxa. It is structured to feature three legacies: the formulation of his conservationist ideology starting in the 1970s, his firm scientific stance in the defence of threatened natural heritage (as in the case of the La Garrotxa Volcanic Zone), and his contribution to the legal protection of this heritage through specific instruments (protection catalogues, creation of the Olot botanical garden, protective regulations for Alta Garrotxa). Bolòs, despite his limited public presence, used his academic prestige to promote environmental protection and showed exemplary commitment, which inspired a new generation of naturalists and conservationists.

La ponència destaca la figura d’Oriol de Bolòs i Capdevila (1924-2017) com un dels botànics catalans més influents del segle XX, i més reconegut, tant a Catalunya com internacionalment. Més enllà de la seva prolífica carrera acadèmica, docent (a la Universitat de Barcelona) i de recerca en botánica (treball de camp i de laboratori, gestió de l’Institut Botànic de Barcelona), el text posa l’accent en el seu profund interès per la llengua catalana i la terminologia científica. Bolòs va ser un poliglot, hereu de l’escola de Pius Font i Quer, i va fer nombroses aportacions a la fixació del lèxic botànic en català i castellà. La seva dedicació a la llengua es va manifestar en treballs específics sobre terminologia, en la inclusió de glossaris multilingües en les seves obres cabdals, i en la seva participació activa en el Diccionari de l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans. A més, Bolòs va mostrar un fort compromís cívic amb la defensa i reivindicació del català durant el franquisme. Va utilitzar la fitonímia i toponímia en les seves publicacions per subvertir la censura, i va ser coautor del “Manifest de Prada”, document que defèn la idoneïtat de l’ús del català en ciencia. La seva obra Parlar bé el català no és gens difícil exemplifica el seu desig de promoure un ús correcte i genuí de l’idioma, i consolida la seva imatge com una figura cabdal de la ciencia i la cultura catalanes.; [EN] The presentation foregrounds Oriol de Bolòs i Capdevila (1924-2017) as one of the most influential Catalan botanists of the 20th century, and one of the most estimed, both in Catalonia and internationally. Beyond his prolific academic, teaching (at the Universitat de Barcelona) and research career in botany (field and laboratory work, laboratories, management of the Botanical Institute of Barcelona), the text emphasises his deep interest in the Catalan language and scientific terminology. Bolòs was a polyglot, a disciple of the school of Pius Font i Quer, and made numerous additions to the botanical lexicon in Catalan and Spanish. His dedication to language was manifested in specific works on terminology, in the inclusion of multilingual glossaries in his major works, and in his active participation in the authoritative Dictionary of the Institute of Catalan Studies. In addition, Bolòs showed a strong civic commitment to the defence and free use of Catalan during the Franco regime. He used phytonymy and toponymy in his publications to subvert censorship, and was co-author of the ‘Manifest de Prada’, a document defending the use of Catalan in scientific contexts. His work Parlar bé el català no és gens difícil (Speaking Catalan well is not difficult at all) exemplifies his desire to promote proper and genuine use of the language, and strengthens his image as a key figure in Catalan science and culture.

En aquest article s’amplia la informació sobre els herbaris de Bolòs conservats a l’Institut Botànic de Barcelona (IBB), i es dona informació sobre la seva formació, el seu volum i el seu contingut, tant des del punt de vista florístic com històric. Es mostra també una petita caracterització dels plecs recol·lectats per Antoni i Oriol de Bolòs, i s’assenyalen alguns exemples de plecs tipus descrits per aquests autors. També es confirma la importància d’Oriol de Bolòs com a director de l’IBB, el qual va donar un fort impuls internacional a aquesta institució, que va arribar a ser un referent de la botànica arreu d’Europa. En resum, l’objectiu final és mostrar la importància de les figures d’Antoni i d’Oriol de Bolòs en la botànica del moment i en la història de l’IBB, i evidenciar el patrimoni i el llegat que ens han deixat.; [EN] This article expands the information on the Bolòs herbaria kept at the Botanical Institute of Barcelona (IBB), and takes a floristic and historical perspective to provide information on their creation, volume and content. A small characteristic selection of the specimens collected by Antoni and Oriol de Bolòs is shown, and some examples of specimens like those described by these authors are presented as well. This paper also confirms the importance of Oriol de Bolòs as director of the IBB. He considerably bolstered the international profile of the institution, which became a benchmark in botany throughout Europe. In summary, the overarching objective is to show the importance of Antoni and Oriol de Bolòs in contemporary botany and in the history of the IBB, and to highlight the heritage and legacy they have left us.

Aquesta ponència traça la història de la Institució Catalana d’Història Natural (ICHN) des de la seva fundació el 1899, i detalla els seus objectius de promoure l’estudi i la conservació del medi natural català. Es descriuen les etapes complexes de la institució, incloent-hi la seva suspensió temporal durant la postguerra, i se subratlla el paper fonamental de la família de Bolòs. Destaca especialment la dedicació d’Oriol de Bolòs, que va ser clau en la reactivació de la ICHN des dels anys 70, com a bibliotecari, impulsor de la Societat Botànica Catalana clandestina, i contribuent essencial per a publicacions com el Llibre blanc de la gestió de la natura als Països Catalans. La ICHN celebrà el seu 125è aniversari el 2024, en gran part gràcies al seu llegat.; [EN] This presentation traces the history of the Catalan Institution of Natural History (ICHN) since its founding in 1899, and details its objectives of promoting the study and conservation of the Catalan natural environment. The complex stages of the Institute are discussed, including its temporary suspension during the post-war period. Special attention is given to the fundamental role of the Bolòs family. Of particular note is the dedication of Oriol de Bolòs, who was key in the reactivation of the ICHN in the 1970s. The presentation discusses his work as a librarian, promoter of the clandestine Catalan Botanical Society, and essential contributor to publications such as the White paper on nature management in the the Catalan Countries. The ICHN celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2024, largely thanks to his legacy.
